To me, it is quite clear: the X351 is the ultimate XJ for everyday use. The best of all worlds, wrapped in a body that still carries pure Jaguar DNA.
I was genuinely pleased when the first owners, a charming couple from Wassenaar, got in touch with me about their beloved XJ. Having been invited to view the prototype, including a meeting with Ian Callum, they decided there and then that the X351 would be their next car. What followed were no fewer than 16 years of enjoyment with this remarkable saloon. It is always special to acquire such a unique Jaguar from its first owner, and even more rewarding to pass it on to the next enthusiast.
The quality is exceptionally high. Just look at the interior, and better still, feel it for yourself. Beautiful leather wherever your eye lands. The seats are trimmed in lovely Cashew semi-aniline leather, combined with elegant Truffle on the dashboard and door panels. What a combination. Rich, tasteful and wonderfully inviting. The high-gloss Burr Walnut completes it perfectly.
It is the details that truly finish an interior. Take the air vents, for instance, finished in chrome. A recognisable design touch, as the very first XJ also featured vents in a similar style. Another lovely detail is the beautifully executed clock, sitting proudly at the centre of the dashboard. In the evening, it is illuminated with quiet elegance, just like so many other elements throughout the cabin.
Then, the drive. The 3.0 diesel has a wonderfully composed character, perfectly suited to this XJ. Quiet, refined, almost understated. More than पर्याप्त power, with torque in abundance. The steering is precise, the driving position exactly where you want it. From behind the wheel, the car seems to shrink around you; its considerable size simply fades away.
The X351 represents the pinnacle of Jaguar’s XJ lineage. More Grace, Space and Pace than ever before, if one still wishes to use that mantra. The XJ surpasses its predecessors, and in many ways, its contemporaries. More distinctive, too. And ultimately, more interesting.
Are there any drawbacks? Very few. Still, I prefer to mention everything I notice, so there are no surprises upon viewing. Two wheels show some kerb marks. There is a scratch on the rear bumper, right-hand side. Additionally, there is a small area of aluminium corrosion on the right. Beyond that, this is very much a true first-owner example: complete documentation, a full set of keys, and an interior that remains in excellent condition. Even the original purchase invoice is still present.
A highly appealing youngtimer, generously specified with features such as Easy Entry, a panoramic roof, 20-inch Kasuga wheels, and the previously mentioned high-gloss Burr Walnut trim.
The XJ will be delivered with a major service and a fresh MOT. The bodywork has been fully polished, while the interior has been thoroughly detailed and treated. The timing belt has been replaced in the recent past.
