The P38 has now gathered a large and steadily growing group of enthusiasts. Unmistakably Land Rover, and in its ‘Autobiography’ form still built with a remarkable amount of handcraft and luxury.
Range Rover – an iconic design. Right from its introduction in 1969, this luxurious and supremely comfortable off-roader was an instant success. The model remained in production for no less than 27 years. From 1994 onwards the first-generation model was renamed Range Rover Classic, as its successor had arrived: the P38A. Named after the project codename Pegasus, built in Block 38A in Solihull.
Production of the P38 continued until 2002. Relatively short, which is why it is now a comparatively rare model. Good examples are becoming scarce. They are dependable classics, superb long-distance cars. Sometimes criticised by those who either do not know them at all, or only know the poorly maintained ones.
Right, let’s look at this particular example; rare, because it is an Autobiography.
There are Range Rovers, and then there are the special few that never followed the standard production line. This 1998 example belongs firmly in the latter category: a genuine Autobiography, completed entirely by hand by Land Rover Special Vehicles under contract number 12071.
In this period – just before the Autobiography programme was more formally structured in 1999 – it was still a true bespoke process. Customers selected their own colours, materials and finishes, after which SVE built the car almost in the tradition of a coachbuilder: carefully, by hand, and without compromise. This car is a striking example of that craftsmanship.
The P38 is finished in a deep green metallic paint, complemented by a beautifully tailored tan leather interior. The cabin sets itself apart with thick walnut panels on the centre console and dashboard, a wooden gear knob and extensive leatherwork. No two Autobiography cars from this era are the same; this interior reflects the understated luxury of the late 1990s.
Under the bonnet the original Special Vehicles plaque is still present, bearing its individually stamped contract number. It confirms exactly what the car already conveys: this is not a standard 4.6 HSE, but a bespoke, built-to-order Range Rover for a discerning first owner.
Today, this stands as one of the most characterful and appealing interpretations of the P38: a discreetly exclusive, fully documented Autobiography from the purest phase of the programme.
Its specification, combined with the remarkably attractive mileage, makes it a truly unique example. The quality is equally evident underneath the car; its condition is exceptionally good. Control arms, axles and chassis rails are all well preserved, and of course a full set of photographs is available.
This P38 was delivered new in Switzerland, after which its previous owner brought it to France. After many years of enjoyment he entrusted it to us. Straight away we set out to elevate an already handsome and well-kept Range Rover even further. The headlining, which had begun to sag, was replaced and is now finished in beautifully fresh alcantara. The interior was fully detailed and a major service was carried out.
The steering wheel is original and in superb condition. The full Alpine audio system is functioning correctly, including the amplifier. Typical P38 matters such as blend motors, heater O-rings and air suspension have been addressed in the past, leaving nothing to worry about and only pure enjoyment.
The original Carin navigation system is still in working order just as it did in 1998. The original radio, CD changer and amplifier are all fully operational, which is rare. Try finding them: P38s in this condition are already scarce, and an Autobiography even more so.
I have driven quite a number of kilometres in this Range Rover myself. Trouble-free and dependable, exactly as it should be.
Quality and maintenance are what matter most. I could write at length about this Range Rover, but there is only so much space in an advert. Browse through the photographs and let yourself be surprised by the condition and completeness of this P38 Autobiography.
To keep it brief yet transparent, I will list the minor imperfections as far as they exist. Barely visible in the photos, but there are a few light scratches in the paintwork. Two of the four wheels show some blemishing. Both keys function, although only one has a working remote.
There is much more to say about this unique P38, but you will only get a true impression when you see and drive the car yourself. You are warmly welcome to visit us in Uden by appointment and the coffee is ready.
