The most distinctive member of the XJ lineage, presented in its most distinguished form. Coupé. Daimler.

There are many beautiful and remarkable XJ models, yet the Daimler Sovereign Coupé stands above them all. It shares the same wheelbase as the Series II saloon of its era, but is executed with only two doors and the elegant pillarless window design. A configuration that is difficult to find today, and certainly so in this condition.

Take a moment to admire the magnificent roofline, finished with the characteristic vinyl roof. The deep Dark Blue paintwork appears exactly as originally delivered. Inside, the interior trimmed in Biscuit leather complements the Coupé beautifully, giving the car its unmistakably refined character.

Proper maintenance ultimately determines whether the classic car experience becomes a pleasure or a disappointment. For that reason this Daimler has received extensive attention in recent years. Many technical aspects that required care have been addressed, and naturally the MOT inspection has been renewed. All of this ensures that stepping into this Coupé and driving it becomes exactly what these cars were built for: pure enjoyment.

Only around 1,600 Daimler 4.2 Coupés left the production line. The example offered here is a left-hand-drive car, making it considerably rarer still. Approximately 170 examples were produced in LHD configuration. Combined with the already limited production and the number of cars that have disappeared over the years, the Daimler Coupé has become an increasingly interesting proposition from a collector’s perspective. Values have been steadily rising for some time now — which, in a way, keeps the hobby pleasantly justifiable.

The paintwork of the Coupé presents well. The leather interior is original and remains in particularly fine condition, with the seat cushions having been re-padded at some point in the past. Finished in the elegant Biscuit shade, the interior contrasts beautifully with the deep blue exterior. The headlining, too, has been renewed during the extensive maintenance carried out in recent years.

Then there are the details. The beautiful chrome side trims along the flanks — a particularly rare feature. The brightwork presents well, and the original wheels remain in very good order. The elegant Daimler badges and emblems complete the overall appearance perfectly.

And then there is the driving experience. The moment you take the Coupé onto the road, it becomes clear that this is something quite different from the majority of Jaguars offered from the same era. The character of the car reveals itself immediately. This Daimler is a true Grand Tourer: calm, composed and immensely comfortable. The suspension is supple without ever becoming floaty, and the engine provides ample torque to cruise effortlessly at low revs.

As mentioned, a Daimler Coupé in left-hand-drive configuration is a rare sight. For that reason an original example should be properly documented. This Daimler is supplied with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Certificate, accompanied by a substantial collection of documentation supporting both its history and maintenance.

The chassis and underside are in particularly good condition. No structural corrosion is visible; the sills and wheel arches are solid. The gearbox was rebuilt in the past, and naturally a comprehensive photo collection is available.

As noted earlier, extensive maintenance has been carried out by specialists within our network. Nothing was left to chance in ensuring that this Daimler remains a wonderfully usable driver’s car.

Are there any imperfections? Naturally — a classic of this age will always show a few. In a few places there are some minor paint bubbles beginning to appear, for instance near the windscreen. Detailed photographs of these areas are available. The carpet is not original, having been replaced at some point with a similar blue carpet. The engine has also been replaced in the past with a period-correct unit, which is generally considered more of an advantage than a drawback.

There is, of course, much more that could be said about this unique Daimler. But the best impression is gained by seeing and driving the car yourself. You are most welcome to visit us in Uden. The coffee will be ready. By appointment only.
