The greatest icon in British motoring history: the Defender. A true enthusiast’s car, presented here in a particularly appealing specification.

Take a proper look at this Keswick Green Defender. It is exactly how one imagines a Defender in the mind’s eye. The Fuji White roof suits the Keswick Green bodywork beautifully and gives the car exactly the character one hopes for.

As mentioned, this is a five-seat Defender 90. Air conditioning, heated seats and more comfortable front seats make it a particularly well-equipped example. The fifth seat is included with the car, though it is currently replaced by a new cubby box with cupholders and useful storage space.

More important still is the technical condition, and that is where the story becomes interesting. After twenty years in the motor trade, there are still moments that surprise me. Not because of the cars themselves, but now and then because of the people behind them.

The previous owner traded this Defender in with me against a very fine Range Rover. He described the Defender as being in ‘as-new condition’. Traded it in unseen. I personally delivered the Range Rover. A good cup of coffee, some easy conversation, even an apology for the missing cigarette lighter in the Defender. A smile, a handshake, goodbye for now. You can probably guess the rest. As it turned out, bringing the Defender home was not entirely straightforward, as several technical problems made themselves known along the way. The previous owner, however, did not feel particularly inclined to take responsibility, even after a polite attempt to sort things out properly.

Still, there is little point in complaining. Better to address things properly and move forward. Once diagnosed, it turned out that a spring had come loose from the clutch plate, intermittently causing shifting issues. The only proper solution was replacement of the complete clutch assembly. During this substantial job, our specialist uncovered a number of additional matters requiring attention, including a transfer box that had overheated in the past and a worn intermediate shaft between the gearbox and transfer box. These are issues seen more often on a Defender Puma, so naturally everything was addressed without hesitation.

A full service followed, including new injector seals and a number of smaller but necessary details. After more than €7,000 in repairs, overhaul and maintenance, this Defender is now exactly how it should be, ready for the next enthusiast who values proper quality.

At the moment the Defender serves as my daily driver, and I have to admit that I enjoy every mile. The upgraded leather seats offer noticeably more support and comfort than the standard ones, the air conditioning works perfectly, which is particularly welcome with summer approaching, and the layout makes the car as practical as it is charming. Four seats when needed, or two seats with a vast amount of space in the back for luggage, tools or simply the dog.

This is exactly the Defender you picture in your head. A 90 Station Wagon in Keswick Green, with white roof and matching white wheels. One of the very last built, and a rare sight on Dutch registration as a passenger car. The mileage is low, the history file is complete from start to finish, including the detailed invoice for the recent €7,000 worth of mechanical work.

Are there any downsides? Fair question. Every car has something, however small. In this case we are talking about a few scratches on the left sill trim from getting in and out, a tiny mark on the right-hand side, and a small dent in the aluminium rear quarter on the left. That is all.

The key set is complete with two keys and two working remote controls. The service file is present, including the original maintenance booklet with factory stickers, as well as a large collection of invoices from previous years.

You will struggle to find a better maintained or more honest example of this icon. And should you wish to personalise the Defender further to suit your own taste, we will of course be happy to assist.

I could go on for hours, but it would be better if you simply come and see it for yourself. You are welcome by appointment in Uden. The coffee is ready.
