The Range Rover P38 captures the imagination like only a Range Rover can.
Range Rover is an iconic design. From its very introduction in 1969, the luxurious and exceptionally comfortable off-roader was an immediate success. The original model remained in production for no fewer than 27 years. In 1994, it was renamed the Range Rover Classic, as its successor was introduced: the P38A. Named after its project code Pegasus and built in Block 38A in Solihull, the P38 marked a new era.
Production of the P38 continued until 2002. Relatively short-lived, which makes it a comparatively rare model today. And this example happens to be one of the very last produced. A beautiful HSE finished in Oslo Blue, sitting on the scarce 18-inch Comet alloy wheels.
Two years ago, I sold this very P38 to its current owner. After more than 20,000 kilometres of enjoyable motoring, she recently decided to move on to another Range Rover: an L322 Autobiography. Which means it is now time to find a new enthusiast for this 4.6-litre V8.
This P38 has been subtly modified. The original air suspension has been replaced with conventional coil springs, and the remote-control keys have been exchanged for non-remote versions. Less original, perhaps, but significantly more dependable in daily use.
Over the past two years, extensive work has been carried out to bring the car back into fine mechanical condition. The lambda sensors have been replaced and the engine ECU re-learned. Two oil leaks were resolved, the most significant being the front crankshaft oil seal, which has since been replaced. The radio was repaired, the air-conditioning system partially renewed and now functions perfectly, and the well-known heater matrix has been replaced along with its associated O-rings. Four new tyres were fitted, and naturally the car has recently passed its MOT inspection.
The result is a wonderfully driving P38, even on coil springs. Ready to be enjoyed immediately by its next owner — a proper modern classic from Land Rover, offering presence, comfort and character in equal measure.
The roof and bonnet have recently been resprayed due to failing clear coat, giving the car a fresh and crisp appearance once again. Despite its overall good condition and immediate usability, this Range Rover is attractively priced. Why, you might wonder? Quite simply because for the perfectionist there are a number of cosmetic details that could be improved.
These are not the usual P38 issues. The heater works perfectly, the headlining is secure, the sunroof operates as it should, and the radio happily plays your favourite station. The points of attention are mainly visual in nature. Two black armrests on the captain’s chairs instead of beige ones. A small scratch here, a minor dent there. Some flaking paint on the Comet alloy wheels. A missing badge. A non-functioning navigation screen, to name a few examples.
Make no mistake, though: the vast majority of Range Rover P38s are in far poorer condition, often offered at higher asking prices. Let alone a late example from 2002.
If a small scratch or a mismatched armrest does not bother you, or if you enjoy gradually bringing a car to perfection yourself over time, then this is your Range Rover.
Here, we drive at least two Land Rovers every day, both privately and professionally. With the right maintenance, they are dependable and trustworthy machines. A Land Rover captures the imagination; a classic Land Rover seduces you. But as you well know, the most tempting seductions rarely come with guarantees for the future. There is much more to say about this Range Rover, but you will only truly appreciate it once you see and drive it for yourself. You are very welcome in Uden — the coffee is ready.
