The Jaguar MK2 remains, to my eye, the most beautiful saloon car ever produced.
I have owned this particular example for over six years now, much like several other classics that tend to stay here longer than intended. It came to me as a part-exchange against my previous MK2. That buyer did rather well. I, initially, did not.
Within the first proper journeys, it became clear the engine was at the end of its life. There was only one correct course of action: a full, professional rebuild. The legendary Jaguar XK 3.8 engine was completely stripped, restored and reassembled with care and precision. Better than new, in many respects. More on that later.
Take a moment to study the lines. Has there ever been a more elegantly drawn saloon?
And then the interior. A cabin defined by craftsmanship. The dashboard is entirely finished in rich burr walnut, extending even into the window surrounds. The condition throughout is remarkably well preserved. The Oxblood Red leather, the classic instrument cluster with its oil pressure, coolant temperature and fuel gauges, the tactile switches so typical of Jaguar in the 1950s and 60s. Even the interior lighting fades gently as it switches off, a small but remarkable detail for its time.
The MK2 was the sports saloon of its era. Spacious enough for four, yet more than capable of keeping pace with the roadsters of the day. It is no coincidence it became such a success.
Buyers could choose between three straight-six engines: 2.4, 3.4 or 3.8 litres, with manual or automatic transmission. From 1967 onwards, the model evolved into the more restrained 240 and 340. This example, however, is exactly as it should be: a 1962 3.8, complete with the heavier chrome bumpers and overriders, proper leather upholstery, and the distinctive fog lamps.
As mentioned, the engine has been rebuilt. The full rebuild was carried out by a remarkable and one of a kind man; those who knew him will know exactly who I mean. We shared plenty of laughter, many cups of coffee, and our fair share of grumbling and swearing along the way. It took some time, but he kept his word; the rebuild is complete, and the result is fantastic. Something to be proud of, with my sincere thanks.
One press of the start button and a deep, sonorous hum immediately fills the air, without hesitation. Exactly as it should be.
Driving the Jaguar MK2 is a breath of fresh air. Many classics spend 95% of their time gathering dust, with only the occasional short drive interrupting that routine. Owners convince themselves that little to no maintenance is required, “as the car is hardly driven anyway”. The declining condition of these cars is a direct result.
That is precisely why you choose an example like this MK2. In optimal health, ready for many miles. A world of difference, and a true tribute to Jaguar as it once was.
The paintwork of this Jaguar Mark 2 is in good condition, and the colour presents beautifully. While the body appears almost untouched in the photographs, you will find some minor imperfections upon closer inspection. Think of a small blister beneath the paint, a light scratch, or the occasional dull spot. It only adds to the character of this MK2 as a true driver’s car, for the genuine enthusiast.
Then the details. Four Vredestein Sprint Classic tyres in good condition. Beautiful leather seats offering excellent support, sourced from a slightly more modern Jaguar, providing added comfort and stability. Wood as far as the eye can see. All gauges functioning, lighting operating exactly as it should. Simply a delightful car.
The automatic gearbox shifts smoothly, and the ‘Intermediate Speed Hold’ functions exactly as intended, allowing you to hold second gear without the Borg-Warner shifting prematurely into third. Ideal for a more engaged, sporting driving style or when using engine braking. The driving experience is superb and not comparable to the majority of MK2s currently on offer.
Extensive documentation of the engine rebuild is available, including photographic evidence and invoices. The total cost of the rebuild amounts to €17,800 including VAT.
Park this MK2 in your garage, take it out at every possible opportunity, and enjoy it. That is exactly what these cars were made for. Get out and drive.
There is much more to say about this unique MK2, but the true impression only comes when you see and drive the car yourself. You are most welcome in Uden. The coffee is ready.
