The unprecedentedly beautiful lines of the bodywork, the magnificent dashboard, pure craftsmanship. That, together with the wonderful 3.8 XK six-cylinder; Jaguar par excellence.

Somewhere in early 2024 I received an email from Jacques. Whether I was interested in a Jaguar S-Type. From 1965, to be precise. One phone call later and it is clear that Jacques is a real enthusiast and the S-Type is worth seeing! The story about the 3.8 S may be good, but the contact with Jacques and his partner is even better. That is often what makes the difference. No nice contact usually means no agreement, that applies to both sides, right?

The garage door opens and one look is enough; This classic was worked on by a professional. A professional in the field of sheet metal, a professional in the field of paint a classic car. If you are interested in it, you will see that immediately. Opening the bonnet; once again the quality shines at you, unprecedented. The interior; a dashboard made of beautiful burl walnut in top condition, expertly processed, expertly varnished and just as important; very professionally fitted and installed.

Jacques is passionate about his classics. He restored his Healey and his XK150 all by himself. When you are so passionate, it is not easy to decide to say goodbye to your hobby, but sometimes reason takes precedence over your passion. The Jaguar is awarded to me by Jacques and goes with me to Oirschot. Time flies, a lot of work has been done to finalize the finishing touches and the 3.8 Saloon is now completely ready.

When talking about this particular classic. There is no doubt about a 3.8 S; this one is just beautiful! Because just look at the design of those rear lights, or actually the entire rear. Have you ever seen anything like this? We are talking about a large sedan, but the sleek elegance radiates from it. This is largely due to the slender chrome bumpers at the time; you didn’t see that at later models. The large rear window, also unique.

The classic S-Type has even more special features. Unlike the MK2, the S is equipped with independent rear suspension, a major innovation at that time. This Independent Rear Suspension system, IRS for short, ensures better road holding and less noise. A major advantage is lower unsprung weight. This is partly because the braking system is mounted against the differential instead of just behind the wheel bearings. This definitely benefits the driving behavior, it is not without reason that an S-Type drives better than an MK2, to name just an example.

Well, I could go on and on, but let’s go to the condition of the Jaguar, which is just as important. The beautiful dashboard, a unique ornament. Perfectly restored, fitted in every detail and assembled with precision, that could be different. Then the chrome, in particularly good condition. The pre-work at the body has been professionally done, you can see that immediately. The paintwork in the color Savoy Gray is particularly well applied. The S-Type originates from California, the carriage was in very good, hard condition upon arrival in the Netherlands. So there is virtually no welding involved. Photos from the USA are of course available, as well as a folder with paperwork from that time.

The wonderful 3.8 Important detail; New piston bushings and pistons have been installed. A modification has also been made to the valve tappet bushings. The mounted electronic ‘1-2-3’ ignition ensures reliable ignition. By the way, this is the original engine; the S-Type is ‘Matching numbers’.

Upon arrival, we provided the S with an extensive maintenance and check-up. Of course all fluids and filters were renewed, both steering rods were changed for new, adjustable ones. Ball joints were renewed.  We were also busy adjusting the carburettors, making the intake system gas-tight, repackaging the gearbox, that sort of things. The S also applied for a MOT, although that is not required anymore for vehicles over 50 years old in The Netherlands. The result? passed without a single point of attention.

So, all settled. The new owner will enjoy it to the fullest. Enjoy the wonderful 3.8. Enjoy the wonderfully comfortable, soft leather seats. Enjoy the beautifully restored wooden dashboard and the beautiful lines of the bodywork. By the way, it’s also fun at the gas station. Nice for one, sad for the other; the perfectly functioning LPG system also makes the S particularly pleasant at ‘the gas station’. Naturally, the 3.8 runs as it should on both petrol and LPG.

Any offsides, you ask? Of course, there are always points to improve. In this case, that would be the gearbox. Just as any other S-type and MK2 automatic gearbox, this one also leaks a bit. We already got some improvements by repacking it partly, but it still is a 50 year old Jag;)

There is still a lot to be said about this special classic, but of course you only get a good picture when you look at the car and drive it yourself. You are very welcome in Oirschot, coffee is ready.
